Texas State Music Community
Close is a word that can be used to describe the Texas State community as a whole and the music community within it.
Aaron Brian, junior and member of the band Tennessee Valley Authority, said Texas State has a vast number of musicians who all seem to bond together as one group.
"It's a nice community, it's very interconnected." Brian said. "We're going to get a lot of musicians that go to Texas State because of where we're at, but it's very easy to get connected."
Brian feels the diversity of the Bobcat student population introduces a wide variety of musical tastes to be experienced.
"You get people from all over the country who come to Texas State for different reasons and they all like different music," Brian said. "You're likely to find any kind of music playing on a Friday night here."
San Marcos lies directly between San Antonio and Austin, giving Texas State a unique blend of close influences. Brian said both cities play a role in the music scene at Texas State.
"On one weekend it's easy to go to either Austin or San Antonio and see what's going on there," Brian said. "You're equally likely to see people from either of those towns because people from both like coming to San Marcos."
Brian said the music community takes on a similar character to that of the University as a whole, seemingly much smaller than its population.
"The music community is a very close knit, tight and laid back community," Brian said. "You make friends easily because people come together through common interests. It's very homey, comfortable and nurturing. That's just kind of the general atmosphere."
Brian believes musicians are free to express individuality despite the large number of people at Texas State.
"You can be yourself at Texas State," Brian said. "If your friendly and outgoing you can meet people that are into the same things as you or even people who aren't, but they can all just come together and be really happy about it and help each other."
